Streets of fear: More than 2,000 assaults in public places across Dublin so far in 2023

Exclusive: Figures obtained by the Irish Mirror show the extent of the capital’s problem with assaults in public places

There have been over 2,000 assaults in public places across Dublin so far this year, official garda figures show.

However, despite the recent spate of shocking incidents, there have actually been less public assaults recorded than in the same period last year.

The Irish Mirror has exclusively obtained figures which reveal the extent of the capital’s problem with assaults in public places, and which show once and for all the level of increase and decrease over the past few years.

The figures show that numbers are up on 2020 and 2021 for the first seven months of this year – but are in fact less than pre-pandemic 2019 and slightly less than last year.

However, they do show a worrying increase in incidents of assault and obstruction against gardai and peace officers.

The figures have been released to us amidst a worrying number of incidents of violence in the city in recent weeks.

The statistics, released by An Garda Siochana to the Irish Mirror, show that there have in fact been less reported assaults in public so far this year than the same period last year.

The figures, which are from January to the end of July this year, show that there have been 2,353 assaults across the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR).

That is 76 fewer than the same period last year – where there were a recorded 2,429 assaults in public places across the DMR.

The figures also show that there has been a noticeable increase in assaults in public places over the past three years – but gardai say they should be considered in the contest of the Covid-19 pandemic.

For instance, there were 1,909 assaults for the same period in 2020, and 1,868 in 2021.

“Comparisons between 2023 days and 2021/2020 should continue to be considered in the context of Covid 19, therefore a long trend comparison are given against 2019 figures,” a Garda spokesperson told us.

“Covid-19 public health measures had a significant effect on crime, with most types of crime reporting reductions during the period.”

For the year 2019, there were 2,535 assaults for the first even months of the year, which is 182 more than this year.
