A man has been arrested over a prison row involving notorious crime boss Wayne Dundon.
Another inmate and four prison officers were injured during the melee in Mountjoy Prison on July 10 last.
It is understood Limerick gangster Dundon (45) attacked a fellow prisoner after he got tipped off an attempt was going to make on his life.
A blade was produced and at least six inmates were involved in the subsequent row and one prisoner injured in the neck.
The Gardai in a statement yesterday said; ” Gardai investigating a public order incident at Mountjoy Prison that occurred on Monday,10th July,2023 arrested a man in relation to the incident under a Section 42 warrant.
“He was detained at a Garda station in Dublin and has since been released from custody of the Section 42 warrant and returned to prison. Investigations are ongoing.”
It is believed the prisoner questioned is still being held in Mountjoy.
Detectives are also planning to speak to Wayne Dundon at some stage.
The jail bust up kicked off when Dundon came out of his cell in the protected custody area of Mountjoy Prison’s B wing like a raging bull and started fighting as the prisoners were let out to go to the gym.
It is understood at least six inmates including one or two aligned to Dundon were involved in the row.
The prison officers were injured when they intervened and went to restrain Dundon and the other prisoners.
Dundon, who is serving life for the 2009 murder of businessman Roy Collins was subsequently moved out of Mountjoy to Portlaoise Prison as punishment and continues to be detained in the maximum security prison.
It is believed some prisoners turned on Dundon because he was intimidating and bullying them. He was also deliberately demanding cigarettes off them from their Tuck Shop allowance.
Twenty three prisoners are normally held in the protective custody unit at any one time.
A Mountjoy source said; ” I don’t think we will see Wayne Dundon back in Mountjoy Prison any time soon. He has made a lot of enemies here.
” He is far better off in Portlaoise for his own safety. We expect Gardai to interview him about the incident some time in the future.
” There is an ongoing full scale investigation in this whole incident.”
The Irish Prison Service said it does not comment on individual prisoner cases.
