Double killer who butchered his own mother and father is back living in society

A man who killed his mother and father in an act of violent rage is out of jail and back living in society.

John Francis Dolan also known as ” Frankie” got a life sentence in February,2001, for murdering his mother Gertrude,56, and five years for the manslaughter of his dad John,71 , in a crime that shocked the nation at the time.

The incident happened at the family home in Dublin’s east Wall in June 1999.

The former Irish rail worker who was 26 year old, first stabbed his mother in a frenzied attack after they had an angry row about his career and then he took his father’s life when he came down the stairs to find out what the commotion was.

Horrified Gardai found the decomposing bodies of the couple lying under a blanket in the house, ten days after they had been reported missing.

Both parents were retired and his mother was on disability benefit because of ill health.

Dolan, an only child, told Gardai after his initial arrest; ” I killed her because she was a bitch who was always drunk.”

But he also said he was sorry he took his father’s life and that he did not deserve to be stabbed.

He pleaded not guilty to murdering his mum but the jury found him guilty. He was acquitted of murdering his father but found guilty of his manslaughter.

He later publicly expressed remorse and regret to the courts for what he did.

Dolan has served over 21 years behind bars most of it in Mountjoy Prison. The two sentences he received ran concurrently.

He was allowed out on day and weekend releases by the Parole Board over the past few years.

He has now been granted permanent parole with a string of conditions attached which includes signing in from time to time at the local Garda station.

If he puts a step wrong and commits any crime he will be immediately returned to jail to serve the rest of his life sentence.

The authorities don’t regard Dolan as a danger to society and believe the killing of his parents was a once off, moment of madness incident which he deeply regrets.

He was also regarded as a model prisoner who kept his nose clean and out of trouble.

It is understood he is now building a new life for himself living in the north-east.

A prison source said;” Frankie Dolan committed a horrendous crime but has paid the price. We don’t expect to see him back here again .

” He has to live with what he did killing his mother and father for the rest of his life.”

An Irish Prison Service spokesperson said; ” The Irish Prison Service does not comment on individual prisoner cases.”
