JIM Sheridan hopes his new film will finally help to solve the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier — as he admits he’s obsessed with cracking the case.

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker, 74, is working on a brand-new documentary about one of Ireland’s most notorious unsolved killings, with new information pointing to a new suspect.

Sheridan’s smash hit Murder At The Cottage, made for Sky, examined the brutal murder of the Frenchwoman at her cottage in West Cork in 1996, and featured contributions from Ian Bailey, a one-time suspect who has always denied involvement in the slaying.

It is understood the new programme will focus on a previously unheard of German suspect, Karl Heinz Wolney, a musician with a long history of violence.

Wolney, who has since died, reportedly lived about 1.5km from Sophie’s holiday home, was performing in nearby Crookhaven on the evening she was killed and had no alibi for the night in question.

Legendary filmmaker Jim told The Irish Sun that it’s almost an obsession for him to discover who Sophie’s murderer was, having investigated the case for more than seven years.
