Man (30s) arrested as gardaí seize M16 rifle, magazine and ammo in Co Clare

A man has been arrested after gardaí seized a Colt M16 rifle, magazine and over 170 rounds of ammunition during a search operation in Co Clare.

The man, in his 30s, is being quizzed at a Garda station after the firearm and ammunition were seized during the operation in Shannon yesterday.

The discovery was made after gardaí attached to the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit, with assistance from the Emergency Response Unit and Southern Region Dog Unit, conducted a search of a wooded area.

“A Colt M16 rifle, magazine and over 170 rounds of ammunition were seized by investigating gardaí,” a statement from the Garda Press Office reads.

“A male (aged in his 30s) was arrested and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, at a Garda station in County Clare.

The firearm and ammunition are subject to analysis by the Ballistics Section of the Garda National Technical Bureau.

Gardai added that investigations are ongoing.
