Relative of GAA star is one of two Bank of Ireland staff under investigation after €20,000 goes missing

Two Bank of Ireland staff, including one who is a close relative of a GAA star, are subjects of a garda investigation after more than €20,000 was reported missing from a bank branch in the West of Ireland.

It is understood that the two bank staff have been subjected to an internal disciplinary process, and have not been at work in recent weeks.

A garda spokesman confirmed that gardaí have received a complaint of “alleged theft from a financial institution” in the county where the Bank of Ireland branch is located and an investigation is now in process. It declined to make any further comment.

A Bank of Ireland spokesman said the bank had been in contact with An Garda Síochána in relation to a criminal investigation in a county in the West of Ireland.

“There is no impact to any customer accounts or funds as a result of this matter,” the bank spokesman said. “Given this is now with An Garda Síochána, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

One of the bank staff members under investigation is active in the GAA and is the son of a nationally known GAA star.
