Hurling legend DJ Carey appears in court charged with 21 fraud offences

HURLING legend DJ Carey has been charged with multiple deception and forgery offences in an alleged cancer treatment scam.

The former Kilkenny hurling star was brought before a court today on a total of 21 fraud-related charges.
The five-time All-Ireland winner was sent for trial after a book of evidence was served on him at Blanchardstown District Court.
Judge John O’Leary sent him forward to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, to appear there on November 3.
Mr Carey (52) was charged today after meeting gardai by arrangement at Blanchardstown garda station.
The charges state he dishonestly by deception induced alleged victims to make monetary payment to him after he fraudulently claimed to have cancer and needed finances to obtain treatment for same.
The Director of Public Prosecutions directed trial on indictment, State Solicitor Jonathan Antoniotti said.
Mr Carey made no reply to any of the charges, the court heard, and he has not yet entered pleas to the charges, which are under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.
