A man has been arrested after an off-duty Garda was hospitalised following a public order incident that occurred at Heuston Station.

An off-duty male Garda, 20s, on his way to work engaged with a man who was involved in disorderly conduct at around 6pm on Monday, September 25.

The Garda was injured in the course of this incident and was taken to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

Garda welfare services have been offered and put in place for the injured officer.

A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested and has since been charged in relation to the incident. He is due to appear before a sitting of the Criminal Courts of Justice on Tuesday morning.

Last month, official Garda figures obtained by the Irish Mirror showed there have been over 2,000 assaults in public places across Dublin so far this year. The figures also showed a worrying increase in incidents of assault and obstruction against gardai and peace officers.

Just last week a garda was treated in hospital following an overnight attack in which he was sprayed in the face with a chemical substance during an attempted arrest in Dublin city centre.

The figures, which are from January to the end of July this year, show that there have been 2,353 assaults across the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR). However, the statistics show that there have in fact been fewer reported assaults in public so far this year than in the same period last year.
