A YOUNG man accused of killing a Dublin pensioner who died almost three weeks after suffering severe injuries has been remanded on continuing bail pending the completion of a book of evidence.

Charles McCaughley, 69, a grandfather from St. Donna’s Road, Donaghmede, in north Dublin, had been on his way home on the night of June 7, 2021.

Locals later raised the alarm after finding him unconscious on the ground at Fairview Strand.

He was rushed to Beaumont Hospital with head injuries and remained in a coma before dying on June 26.

Detectives at Clontarf Garda station opened an investigation.

In August, they charged Josh Rushe, 23, from Matt Talbot Court, Dublin 1, with manslaughter for the unlawful killing of Mr McCaughley at Fairview Strand on June 7, 2021.

The father of two was granted bail and ordered to appear today at Dublin District Court to be served with the prosecution book of evidence.

However, Judge Bryan Smyth noted that it was not ready, and he acceded to a defence request to adjourn the case for a month peremptory against the State.

The accused was remanded on continuing bail.

Earlier, Detective Sergeant David Ennis told the court that the accused “made no reply after charge”.

The DPP directed that Mr Rushe’s case proceed to trial on indictment in the Circuit Court, but a book of evidence has to be served on the accused before granting a trial order.

Mr Rushe had to surrender his passport and ID cards and not apply for duplicates or travel documents.

He has yet to indicate a plea and did not address the court.

He was also ordered to provide gardaí with a contact mobile number, be available 24 hours a day, keep the phone switched on, and notify them of any address change.

Legal aid was granted after the court heard he was on social welfare.
