The 67-year-old woman who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Dublin on Wednesday night has been named as Carol Seery, who lived in Finglas.

Her husband, Gerry, witnessed the fatal collision that happened at around 9.10pm and was “very fortunate not to have suffered serious injuries or worse”, according to a source.

Mr Seery is a retired garda who spent most of his career in Finglas.

He has been working part-time in recent times, and it is understood he met his wife for dinner after his shift before the incident happened on Phibsboro Road.

The couple were crossing near the Bald Eagle pub when the car sped through the junction at Cross Guns Bridge before swerving into the outside lane.

Mr Seery was uninjured, but is described as being “devastated”. He was being comforted last night by family and friends.

The Irish Independent has learned the 07 D silver Honda Civic was sold legitimately last weekend, but the buyer did not provide accurate details and it was not registered.

No arrests have yet been made in the investigation, which is being carried out by Mountjoy gardaí, who are appealing for the driver to turn themselves in.

It is being treated as a case of dangerous driving causing death.

The incident was captured on CCTV, but no suspects have been identified. It is not known how many people were in the car.

It was recovered a short time later on nearby Avondale Road, Phibsboro, with significant damage to the passenger side.

A garda traffic unit had been involved in a short pursuit of the car, which lasted “a matter of seconds”, before it hit Mrs Seery.

The vehicle had come to the atten- tion of gardaí after it ran a red light and then sped away from the unmarked patrol car.

Following standard procedure, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) will conduct a separate inquiry into the conduct of the gardaí who interacted with the car before the fatal hit-and-run.
