When Máiría Cahill waived her anonymity in 2014, she detailed allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of an IRA member and the damage done to her by a botched IRA “investigation”.

Long before the Me Too movement, Ms Cahill was disparaged and abused relentlessly by people who put their politics before their morals, and chose protecting the Republican cause above protecting a young woman who detailed serious allegations of sexual abuse. She has been extremely critical of the response of Sinn Fein, the former political wing of the Republican organisation that brought her to the brink of suicide.

Now, Ms Cahill is watching as Sinn Fein’s political ascension brings it closer to power in the south. But she feels the party’s past is still unresolved, and voters may find that the grass is “not always greener”

Ellen Coyne is joined on the Indo Daily podcast Máiría Cahill to discuss her new book Rough Beast – My Story and the Reality of Sinn Féin, and to reflect on the price that Ms Cahill and her family have paid for speaking out against the IRA.
