The U.S. government finally calls it like it is in Niger
REUTERS/Mahamadou Hamidou
Two months after a general declared himself the new leader of Niger following the ouster of the West African country’s elected president, the U.S. government finally officially determined that a military coup took place in the country, Semafor’s J.D. Capelouto reports. In doing so, the U.S. suspended almost $200 million in aid to Niger as well as an additional $442 million in trade and agricultural assistance. Why did it take so long? U.S. officials say they finally exhausted all potential ways to restore constitutional order in the country. But the declaration doesn’t mean they’ve completely severed ties with Niger. As the New York Times reports, the new U.S. ambassador to Niger will remain at her post in Niamey, military personnel will remain at bases in the country, and humanitarian and health assistance will continue to flow.
