A father of four who threatened his ex-partner in an email, “karma is going to get you”, after calling her a “slut” in front of their young child, has been jailed for five months.

The accused (27) also called his “long-suffering” former girlfriend a “p*key” in an email – all of the contact in breach of a domestic violence order she had taken out against him.

He pleaded guilty to twice contravening a safety order, in the space of a week in 2021.

As well as the five-month prison term, Judge David McHugh suspended another five-month sentence.

Garda Sarah Flood told Blanchardstown District Court that on June 13 that year, the victim reported she had been walking down a street with her eight-year-old son when the accused pulled up alongside them in her car.

He said “all right, [son’s name]” to the boy and “all right, slut” to her.

The court heard the man was not supposed to have any contact with her under the order.

Then on June 20, he sent her a number of emails while he was also prohibited from doing so under bail conditions.

“He said karma is going to get you, and called the injured party a p*key,” Gda Flood said.

The injured party could not attend court and did not wish to make a victim impact statement.

The court heard the man had previous convictions for breaching domestic violence orders, as well as drugs offences.

This was his fourth breach of the order and defence solicitor Wayne Kenny said his client accepted his previous record “doesn’t read well”.

The accused had pleaded guilty on an earlier date and a probation report had been ordered.

He did engage with the service but that did not go “according to plan” and the report was “not satisfactory whatsoever”.

The issue between him and his former partner was around access to one child, Mr Kenny said.

The accused had moved on now and was back with a previous partner, with whom he had a child, and now also had a newborn.

He had been working full-time but was currently out of work. Mr Kenny asked the judge to be as lenient as he could in the circumstances.

The man had an “atrocious record” and the only mitigating factor was his guilty plea, Judge McHugh said.

“It appears without any shadow of a doubt she is long-suffering,” the judge said of the victim.

He suspended the second sentence for two years, taking into consideration the fact that the accused was “moving on with his life”.

The accused served notice of appealing against the sentence after it was handed down.
