Behind the scenes, the garda cold case unit is quietly and methodically progressing some of the country’s most high-profile unsolved murder cases.

The 1996 killing of Frenchwoman Sophie Toscan du Plantier (39) in West Cork, and the murder of the infant known as Baby John in south Kerry in 1984, are top of the media agenda.
