A Sinn Féin TD has lashed criminals in Limerick for their “shocking” crimes, after a car was burned out in his district overnight.
Maurice Quinlivan, who represents Limerick City and parts of Tipperary posted an image of the blazing inferno this morning on social media.
Local criminals had set the vehicle alight and left it to burn in a park, in view of families starting their day.
“This car just been burned out this morning – shocking for local people to have to put up with this,” Mr Quinlivan wrote.
The Ballynanty native said he had been in touch with authorities and highlighted the effect these images have on young people.
“I’ve been in touch with An Gardaí Siochána and I’ve rang Limerick Council to get the car removed.
“Shocking thing for locals to have to witness especially as kids were on the way to school.
“We need the return of community gardaí and a much better garda visibility across the city,” Mr Quinlivan concluded.
Earlier this year, gardaí in Limerick warned of an increase in the theft of certain types of cars in the city.
It is reported that joy riders and thieves are targeting second hand Japanese imports as these vehicles are not required to fit an immobiliser.
These devices provide extra security to a motor by rendering the car useless without a fob.
It was reported there has been a rise in the theft of Mazda Demios, Toyota Aqua and Toyota Vitz models over the Summer.
It is recommended by gardaí that when buying a car, ask the car dealer if the car has an immobiliser fitted, something which can also be done retrospectively.
