A Sinn Féin TD has slammed a suspected gang attack that saw at least six people dressed in all black beating a man on the grounds of Dundalk Institute of Technology.
A video of the incident is circulating online and shows two cars pulling into the car park at the Green Park apartments, which are independently owned, at around 2.30pm on Monday afternoon.
Six men, all dressed in black with their faces concealed, jumped out of the vehicles and began punching another man.
Some of the assailants can also be seen smashing the windshield of a nearby car before they fled the scene by car and on foot.
A second car was also damaged in the incident and was “covered in blood”, a source told sundayworld.com.
The incident has been described as “utterly brazen” and “absolutely unacceptable” by local TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.
Speaking to Michael Reade on LMFM this morning, he said: “This is utter brazenness. It’s utterly unacceptable and it’s not something that can go on. I would say to anyone that’s involved in this that they need to take a long, hard look at themselves.
“In fairness to this young man that was beaten up, an extremely frightening circumstance, I think the only positive we can see is that he walked away from the situation. But none of it is alright. It’s absolutely brazen.
“This could have ended up being a hell of a lot more serious.”
He said that he has been liaising with gardaí in Dundalk who are investigating the attack.
“I’ve spoken to them and they’re investigating. Obviously they’re taking it incredibly seriously. They will be looking at all CCTV footage. Anyone with information, particularly if they have dash cams that they believe are useful, needs to provide it to them.
“Let’s be clear: there’s a considerable amount of people who are involved in this. People are going to know who these (people) are.
“I’d say, given the circumstance where we find ourselves with so much CCTV footage and whatever, they will be found out.”
Presenter Michael Reade described the incident as “something from The Sopranos” and said the attackers operated “with military precision”.
Michael Reade: “What seemed clear to me is that this wasn’t the first time they’d done this sort of thing. They seemed to be experienced.
“They were in, they were out, they made sure they blocked anyone from seeing what was happening.
“It looked like a warning. It was very frightening to see an organised gang at work in Dundalk,” he added.
Gardaí said they are investigating an “incident of criminal damage that occurred to a vehicle at a residential premises” and said enquiries are ongoing.
They noted that gardaí “have not received a report of an alleged assault for this location at this time.”
A spokesperson for DkIT said: “DkIT is aware of a video that has been circulated of an alleged incident that happened in an area near to the Institute’s campus.
“The location that this alleged incident took place in is the car park of Green Park accommodation which is independently owned and not part of DkIT property.
“DkIT do everything within their power to provide a safe campus for all students and staff, the Institute continually evaluates the safety needs of our community.”
