The revelation that not one of the most experienced and qualified senior gardaí in the force has applied for the post of Deputy Commissioner in charge of Policing Operations has been described as an “astonishing and extremely disturbing” development.
The highly sensitive position carries the responsibility for all policing and national security operations including the fight against organised crime, terrorism and espionage by rogue nations.
