A man has been arrested over a hit-and-run incident that killed the wife of a former garda in Dublin last month.
Carol Seery (67) suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a silver Honda which was travelling at high speed as she and her husband were crossing the road at Cross Guns Bridge on the Phibsborough Road, Dublin 7 at 9.10pm on Wednesday 4 October.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband Gerry, who is understood to have retired from An Garda Síochána over a decade ago, was “very lucky not to have suffered serious injuries or worse”, according to a source.
Gardaí in Mountjoy Garda Station arrested a man in his 20s today in relation to the investigation.
He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in Dublin and investigations are ongoing.
The incident was captured on CCTV, but no suspects had been identified until now.
The car was recovered a short time after the incident at nearby Avondale Road with significant damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.
A garda traffic unit had been involved in a short pursuit of the car, which lasted “a matter of seconds”, before it hit Mrs Seery.
The vehicle had come to the attention of gardaí after it ran a red light and then sped away from the unmarked patrol car.
Following standard procedure, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) will conduct a separate inquiry into the conduct of the gardaí who interacted with the car before the fatal hit-and-run.
