A man is being quizzed by gardaí this evening connection with a fatal assault on a 43-year-old Limerick man.
The body of Ger Curtin was discovered outside a house on Sarsfield Avenue in the Garryowen area of the city at around 4.45am.
A man aged in his 40s was arrested at the scene.
He was being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
As part of the probe, investigators are seeking to establish the reason the deceased man was present at the property at so late an hour.
Local councillor Conor Sheahan yesterday told the Sunday World the death has caused shock among the local community.
“First of all, as a local councillor who lives in the community, I can say there is a sense of deep shock and sadness at that has occurred here,” he said.
“Sarsfield Avenue would be home to an older, very settled community and the house where this happened is in a cul de sac, so you should only go up there if you had business there.
“I really hope gardaí can conclude their investigation quickly and that justice will be served.”
Family and friends of the dead man paid tribute to him on social media.
One wrote: “I really and truly cannot believe what I’m hearing today. Poor ol’ Ger. Heart-breaking news!
“Thinking of your mother and father … may you rest in peace.”
Another wrote: “Thinking of the Curtain family at this sad time. R.I.P Ger. One cruel world we live in.”
According to gardaí, ambulance personnel tended to Mr Curtin at the scene but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
A Garda spokeswoman said yesterday that the local coroner had been notified.
The services of the Office of the State Pathologist had also been requested and a post-mortem will be carried out in due course.
“A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to the family of the deceased,” she added.
Gardaí from Henry Street Station are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them.
They are also keen to speak to any person who was in the vicinity of Sarsfield Avenue between 4am and 5.15am on Saturday who may have camera footage, including CCTV and dash cam footage.
Anyone with information which may assist the inquiry is asked to contact Henry Street Garda station on 061 212 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
