Man accused of murdering wife in Mayo goes on trial pleading not guilty by ‘reasons of insanity’

A jury has been sworn in for the Central Criminal Court trial of a man accused of murdering his wife in Co Mayo four years ago.

Today, James Kilroy (49) said he was “not guilty by reasons of insanity” to the sole charge of the murder of Valerie French Kilroy when it was read out to him by the court registrar.

Park ranger Mr Kilroy is charged with the murder of Ms French Kilroy at their home at Kilbree Lower, Westport, Co Mayo, between June 13, 2019 and June 14, 2019, both dates inclusive.

Ms Justice Caroline Biggs told the jury of seven women and five men that the trial is expected to last up to three weeks and will begin in front of Mr Justice Paul McDermott tomorrow at the Central Criminal Court.
