Gardaí have arrested two men following the seizure of around €150,000 worth of cannabis in Monaghan and Louth.

The men, aged in their 40s and 50s, were detained under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977, and are expected to appear before Monaghan District Court later this morning.

The arrests followed the search of a premises in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan on Monday evening, during which local gardaí and members of the Armed Support Unit seized suspected cannabis with an estimated value of €70,000.

A follow-up search was conducted at a premises in Dromiskin, Co Louth, where suspected cannabis valued at around €80,000 was found.

The suspected drugs are being sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis, and investigations are ongoing.

The seizures were carried out as part of Operation Tara, a national anti-drugs strategy that was launched by An Garda Síochána in July 2021. It’s aimed at disrupting, dismantling and prosecuting drug-trafficking networks at all levels.

These include importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale, and the supply of controlled drugs.

The operation has a particular focus on tackling street-level dealing in cities, towns and villages across the country, targeting individuals involved in the drug trade based on intelligence activity and the latest crime trends.
