A Limerick man linked to a major gangland money laundering operation in the city reportedly returned to mourn his brother following his tragic death last weekend.

Shane Curtin’s brother Ger was laid to rest on Wednesday after his death following an alleged assault in Garryowen.

The 42-year-old father of two died from injuries after he was allegedly hit with a shovel at a house where he was found unconscious.

The Sunday World recently revealed how car dealer Shane Curtin was a key figure in laundering cash for the city’s notorious drug gangs.

Shane Curtin is one of four men involved in Bawn Motors which had been set up to launder cash from the city’s drug mobs.

Details of his alleged involvement in serious crime emerged during a Criminal assets Bureau case against the car firm.

A senior officer gave evidence that garda intelligence shows Curtin has connections in the drugs trade in Limerick.

In 2009, he was in a vehicle that was stopped after a tip-off and ecstasy tablets worth €10,000 were found.

It was also stated that Curtin remains active in importing and distributing controlled drugs and spends most of his time outside Limerick.

When the Criminal Assets Bureau raided the company in March 2019, seizing 111 vehicles, it was one of the biggest such operations carried out by the agency.

In a judgment it was stated Curtin did not have the legitimate means to have injected into the business the money needed to have achieve the growth it did.

This week Shane Curtin’s brother Ger, one of 15 siblings, was remembered at his funeral mass as a “loveable rogue” who was “loved by many”.

Ger Curtin, who had convictions for burglary and theft, died “way too soon”, Fr Frank O’Connor, told mourners who attended the funeral mass, held at St John’s Cathedral, Limerick City.

Mr Curtin’s family were in “great shock and sadness” and trying to cope with the “tragedy and suddenness” of his death, Fr O’Connor said.

A family friend at the funeral mass thanked paramedics “who arrived at the scene of where Ger’s life was so brutally and callously taken from him, and who tried their best to save him”.

Following the mass, a sky-blue casket with Ger Curtin’s remains was taken by hearse for burial to Mount St Lawrence Cemetery.

Joe Cahill, (44), Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen, is before the courts charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Mr Curtin, in the early hours of November 4th.

Gardaí have appealed that for anyone was in the Sarsfield Avenue area on Saturday morning 4th November, between 4am and 5.15am, or who may have camera footage, including CCTV and dash cam footage, to contact them.
