The Department of Social Protection has issued an urgent alert in anticipation of the cost of living payments scheduled for next week.
Starting Monday, individuals will receive lump sums for the cost of living, as outlined in Budget 2024 last month. Unfortunately, this has resulted in a rise in scam attempts, and the DSP is advising people to remain vigilant.
A statement on the Department’s website said: “Following the Budget 2024 announcement, there may be an increase in fraudulent texts or calls asking people to register for the lump sums and double payments. If you are entitled to a lump sum or double payment, these will be automatically paid, and you do not need to apply for them.”It continued: “We are aware of fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the department. These texts will sometimes seek personal information or ask you to verify details, for example, for cost-of-living payments.”DSP staff never ask for such details by text. If you receive a text claiming to be from the department, please do not engage and do not share any part of your PPS number, bank account details, or any other personal information.”
The Department warned: “If you have provided any bank details, please contact your bank immediately. If you have provided any of your personal information, please contact the Gardaí immediately.”
Several groups will receive one-time payments starting on November 20. Individuals receiving Working Family Payment, Fuel Allowance, and Disability Support Grant will all receive lump sums starting Monday. Recipients of these payments will receive €400, €300, and €400, respectively, during the course of the following week.
