MULTIPLE people have been appearing in court on public order, weapons, theft and other charges following yesterday’s riot in central Dublin.

The accused were arrested amid violent scenes in the city centre that erupted after three children and a woman were stabbed near a school.

More than 30 people were arrested and charged, mostly men and a smaller number of women. Many have already appeared before separate sittings of Dublin District Court today, with the hearings continuing this afternoon.

Most of the charges are public order offences, but one man is accused of possession of a knuckle duster, another allegedly had kitchen knives while others were caught in possession of stolen goods including clothes and cigarettes, gardai said.

Most of the defendants were being granted bail, some with conditions that they stay out of areas of the north city centre and do “not partake in any violent protest or large gathering.”

The accused are aged between their 30s and 50s and have addresses inside and outside Dublin.

Most of the charges can be dealt with summarily in the district court and many of the adjournments were for the accused to decide how they intend to plead. Other charges are more serious and the directions of the DPP will be required.

The arrests came as gardai dealt with the chaos that followed yesterday’s stabbings near a school on Parnell Square.

During the violence, mobs looted shops and torched garda cars, a tram and a bus.

A patrol car and Luas tram were set alight by crowds who gathered near O’Connell Street while a bus and car were also burned on O’Connell Bridge as disorder continued well into the night.

In all, 13 stores were damaged or subject to looting, eleven garda vehicles destroyed through arson or extensively damaged and three Dublin Buses destroyed and a Luas tram destroyed.

There was major traffic disruption for commuters, which continued this morning. O’Connell Street and Parnell Street remain closed to traffic as gardaí continue to examine the area following last night’s violence.

A female creche worker and a five-year-old girl are in a serious condition after the stabbings.

Two other children suffered lesser injuries. A man, who is currently under guard, also suffered injuries during the incident. He is currently in an unnamed hospital in the city.
