A major garda investigation has been launched after a crime gang allegedly rented an Airbnb in Mayo to carry out around 20 burglaries in the surrounding area.
The notorious Dublin gang appears to have rented the Airbnb, which acted as a launch pad for their criminal activity, and carried out a number of serious burglaries in surrounding counties in the space of five days.
The gang rented a property near Knock, according to reports this morning, with the host completely unaware of the true intentions of the booking,
Initial investigations by gardai show that as many as eight criminals stayed in the accommodation for less than a week as they robbed homes in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.
The gang is believed to have targeted as many as 20 properties in their crime spree, mostly during the night when the homes were not occupied. Cash and jewellery were the main items that they were looking for and it’s believed they managed to get away with thousands of euro worth of items.
It’s understood that the gang may have used as many as three vehicles during the spree and gardai also believe they wore camouflaged clothing and wellington boots. The gang also seems to have targeted homes that were in particularly remote locations.
After discovering the gang’s plans, gardai set up a special operation at the Airbnb to arrest them but the criminals never returned and so far no arrests relating to these burglaries have been made.
Two of the recent burglaries in Galway took place in Moylough, East Galway. Two burglaries occurred in that location on 9 November, 2023. The first incident was reported in Brierfield North, Moylough Ballinasloe. Gardai say the burglary occurred between 8.15am and 6.15pm and the house was ransacked during the course of the burglary.
