A MAN charged with taking more than €5,000 during armed robberies at a shop and a bookmaker in Dun Laoghaire and Arklow has been remanded in custody and will face objections to bail.
Investigating gardai arrested Jamie Carroll, 41, of Mary B. Mitchell Close, Arklow, Co. Wicklow, on Friday evening and charged him over two incidents.
He is accused of the robbery of a male staff member at a Circle K shop, Rochestown Avenue, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, of a metal till worth €250 on November 24.
Mr Carroll, who has yet to enter a plea, was further charged with robbing €5,000 from a female during an earlier incident at Boylesports, Lower Main Street, Arklow, on October 23 last. The offences are contrary to section 14 of the Theft & Fraud Act.
He was held pending his appearance before Judge David McHugh at Dublin District Court on Saturday.
Detective Garda Darren Mulhall told the court that Mr Carroll “made no reply to charge after caution”, and he was handed copies of the charge sheets.
The detective said he intended to object to bail and furnished the court with a summary of his grounds.
However, before he commenced giving evidence, defence counsel Kevin McCrave said he was instructed that his client, who did not address the court, wished to defer his bail application.
Judge McHugh remanded him in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court via video link on Friday, pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
A trial venue ruling has yet to be given as to whether the case will stay in the District Court or go to the Circuit Court, which, on conviction, has broader sentencing powers.
The judge granted legal aid to the accused, who is on social welfare, and he acceded to a defence request to direct medical attention for Mr Carroll in custody.
A woman in her forties who was also arrested has since been released without charge. A file will be prepared for the DPP.
