Barrister and GAA pundit Joe Brolly has instructed solicitors to examine tweets Conor McGregor posted about him for ‘defamation’ – in a move that could ultimately see the pair square off in court.
Ex-Derry footballer Brolly, who witnessed the aftermath of the Parnell Square attack in which three children and childcare worker Leanne Flynn were stabbed, had called out McGregor for the inflammatory tweets the MMA fighter posted in the lead up to the Dublin riots.
His comments led to an angry response from McGregor who used the X social media platform to post tweets about Mr. Brolly – which the respected former Derry footballer believes were defamatory of him.
In a tweet posted earlier today, Mr. Brolly wrote: “My lawyers are examining tweets about me from an individual.
“These include incitement to hatred, violence and defamation
“I have also instructed them to consider tweets encouraging violence, arson, criminal damage and hatred (versus) others amounting to criminal offences for reports to An Garda Siochana.”
Mr Brolly did not mention McGregor’s name in the tweet but the Sunday World understands he is the individual who authored the tweets Mr Brolly is referring to.
McGregor has come under fire following his comments leading up to the riot in the capital city last Thursday.

On the day of the riots, the athlete told his followers on X: “Ireland, we are at war”, which many across the country have condemned as inflammatory.
Taking to the stage at the ‘The Gig for Gaza; in the 3Arena on Tuesday night, Brolly gave an impassioned speech, in which he mentioned the fallout of the Dublin riots and McGregor.
“I promised my wife I wouldn’t call him a ****!” The barrister said of McGregor.
“Who are we at war with?
“With Brazilian Deliveroo drivers who save children’s lives outside a nursery?
“With Filipino student nurses who spent ten minutes frantically trying to save a small child’s life?
“At war with bus drivers, with black people, with trans people, with librarians?
“With our gay friends and neighbours? Who are we at war with?”
Brolly then went on to said that he had “engaged publicly” with McGregor and made a report to the Gardaí about “What I believed to be serious criminal offences that unleashed a deluge of hate…”
“As my mother said, ‘Get in the queue’.”
