A young man is in a critical condition in hospital following an attack involving a number of people in Dublin city centre overnight.

The victim, who is aged in his 20s, was socialising with friends in the south-inner city before the assault occurred.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident outside a pub on Usher’s Quay in Dublin 8 and discovered the man with serious head injuries.

The male, who is a foreign national, was rushed to Beaumont Hospital where he remains in a coma this afternoon.

A senior source said that the man’s condition has been described as critical as a result of head injuries suffered during the assault.

“Gardaí are following a number of lines of inquiry in relation to this serious assault and are confident of identifying all parties involved.

“This was a serious attack and the victim remains in an induced coma in hospital,” the source added.

Gardaí believe the man was socialising in a pub in the area when an altercation occurred with another group of men.

When the victim left the bar, later, he was set upon by a number of men and physically assaulted and suffered serious head wounds.

Gardaí based at Kevin Street garda station are investigating the attack and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

No arrests have yet been made but detectives are conducting inquiries in the locality in an effort to identify all parties involved.

Investigators are also attempting to track down a number of witnesses who were at the scene and are harvesting CCTV footage from the area.

Extra resources have been deployed to the city in recent months, including the garda public order unit, following a number of high-profile violent attacks this year.

This includes the attack on US tourist Stephen Termini on Talbot Street and the assault of a UK tourist in Temple Bar. In both cases a number of suspects have been identified and charged.

Confirming last night’s incident a garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí were alerted following disturbance involving a group of males outside a premises on Ushers Quay, Dublin 8 shortly before 9pm on Sunday 3rd December 2023. A male individual aged in his late 20s sustained a head injury in the course of the incident was removed from the scene by ambulance.

“He is currently being treated at Beaumont Hospital where his condition is understood to be serious. The scene was preserved overnight and examined by local scenes of crime officers.

“No arrests have been made to date and enquires are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Kevin Street Garda Station 01 6669400 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111,” the garda spokesperson added.
