A man jailed this week for raping a woman he met online was previously involved in a vicious gang attack which left several victims requiring hospital treatment.

Daniel Maymay (31), of Thornbury, Kilmacrennan Road, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, was sentenced to six years behind bars this week with the final year suspended by Mr Justice Paul Burns in the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on Monday after being found guilty of one count of rape on January 28, 2019.

His trial heard that Maymay chatted with his victim over social media and arranged to meet for a coffee and to smoke cannabis.

He brought her to his house where he raped her after she had told him to stop and said she wanted to go home.

The incident was not his only serious brush with the law. He was involved in a gang attack on a group in Letterkenny which left several men with serious injuries in 2013.

Maymay and three co-accused pleaded guilty to attacking the group at separate locations in the town on August 30, 2013.

Letterkenny Circuit Court heard that one victim needed €10,000 worth of dental work after being set upon by the group who used fence posts weapons, while another victim suffered a broken arm and third was knocked unconscious.

It was claimed that the attacks took place after a racist comment was made to Maymay, who is originally from the Philippines, but this was strenuously denied by the victims.

Maymay pleaded guilty to violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon but avoided jail over the incident.

He was ordered to pay €7,500 in compensation to his victims but his barrister said he was unable to raise the money as he was separated from his partner and paying maintenance. He was ordered to do 200 hours community service
