Leitrim Village road remains closed after tornado causes ‘millions worth of damage’

  • The
    road through Leitrim Village is set to remain closed overnight as a
    tornado caused ‘millions of euros’ worth of severe damage in the
    village.

    A “tornado” hit around lunchtime on Sunday causing serious damage to property and cars.

    The severe weather event happened around 12.30pm as Storm Fergus began to cross the country.

    The road through the village has been closed since the event, and will remain closed overnight as a ‘safety precaution.’

    A
    spokesperson for Leitrim County Council said, “Following damage caused
    by a tornado at lunchtime today in Leitrim Village, the R280 will remain
    closed overnight for safety precautions.

    “Diversions in place at Battlebridge Fingerboard and Drumgorman Lake.

    “Public advised that no persons have been seriously injured.”

    Sligo-Letrim
    TD Frank Feighan visited the village earlier today and said millions of
    euros worth of damage has been caused by the tornado.

    “Called into Leitrim Village to offer my support and solidarity after the tornado struck.

    “Damage to cars, boats and property is estimated to be in millions of euros.

    “Thankfully and miraculously no serious injuries or fatalities.

    “Once
    again great credit to Gardaí, emergency services and the local
    community for their great work and support,” said Deputy Feighan.

    A further yellow weather warning for wind in County Leitrim has been issued by Met Éireann.

    The
    warning remained in place until 9pm on Sunday and advises of very
    strong and gusty winds with potential impacts including difficult
    travelling conditions and debris with loose objects displaced.

    A
    spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said emergency services remain in
    Leitrim town and they have advised people to avoid the village.

    “Garda and emergency services are attending an incident in Leitrim Village.

    “The village is closed.

    “Please avoid the area and be patient while emergencies services deal with the incident.

    “The public are advised that no persons have been seriously injure
