‘There is no deterrent any more’ – retailers hit out at ‘explosion’ of shoplifting led by gangs of aggressive youths

Representatives from Ireland’s leading retail stores have called for stronger deterrents and greater community policing following an “explosion of shoplifting” being led by what were described as “gangs of feral youths”.
The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment met this morning to discuss the effect that shoplifting – which costs the retail sector €1.6bn per year – is having on the country.
