TWO gardaí have been hospitalised after their patrol car was rammed in a suspected targeted attack in Dublin city centre.

The injured gardaí are currently receiving treatment for their injuries following the ramming earlier today.

The patrol car was travelling along Brunswick Street North, Dublin 7, shortly after midday when it was approached by a black Renault car.

The Renault subsequently ploughed into the Garda car before both vehicles came to a stop outside the entrance of the Coroner’s Court building on the street.

A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and is currently being held at a city centre garda station.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the incident and believe the ramming was a “deliberate” and “targeted” act.

One source said: “At this stage indications are that this was not a random incident and that the garda patrol car was deliberately driven into, potentially putting both members in serious harm. Gardaí had not interacted with this vehicle prior to being rammed.

“Thankfully both members have not suffered any serious injuries but this targeted incident shows again the dangers gardaí face every day”.

It’s understood that both gardaí are awaiting scans in hospital but are expected to be discharged soon and are receiving support from the organisation.

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Independent: “Gardaí are investigating an incident which occurred on Brunswick Street in Dublin 7 shortly after midday today, 15th December 2023.

“A Garda vehicle was rammed during this incident. Two Gardaí were later taken to the Mater Hospital to receive medical treatment.

“A man (40s) has been arrested for an offence under the Criminal Damage Act 1991 and is currently detained at a Garda station in North Dublin under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“Investigations ongoing.

“All members involved are receiving support from their colleagues and local Garda Management and the wider organisational supports of the Peer Support Service, Chief Medical Officer and 24 hour counselling service have been provided if required.”
