Louth Sinn Fein TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has said he is “appalled at the violence towards gardaí” following an incident earlier this week in which two off-duty officers were assaulted less than a mile from Dundalk’s main garda station.

It has been reported that the two gardai were followed as they left a nightclub in Park Street and were viciously assaulted on Anne Street and that two people have been arrested.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that gardaí are investigating an assault that occurred on Anne Street in Dundalk shortly after 1 a.m. on Monday, December 11, adding that the investigations are ongoing.

Deputy Ó Murchú described the attack as: “A shocking and disturbing incident that happened to gardaí while they were off duty. They were attacked and badly injured.

“I utterly condemn this violence towards gardaí and ask anyone with information or who witnessed anything to bring it to the attention of the investigating gardaí.”
