A major security operation involving Revenue Customs officials, supported by An Garda Síochána, took place last night at Foynes Port, Co Limerick, around the discovery of a massive consignment of suspected cocaine on board a cargo ship.

The cargo bulk carrier docked at the port town earlier on Tuesday, sparking a major response by Revenue backed up by Gardaí.

The 20,000-tonne vessel is believed to have been carrying grain.

A security source said it appeared that a “significant” volume of suspected drugs was discovered.

Sources remained tight-lipped on the operation which they described as “very much a live operation” and one that was “being led by Revenue”.

A Revenue Customs Service spokesman confirmed that it was “undertaking a live operation” last night, but would not disclose any details.

“No further comment is available at this time,” the spokesman added.

A garda spokeswoman said: “This is a matter for Revenue Customs service at this time, so please direct your query to their office this evening.”

It is believed gardaí and Revenue will make statements on the discovery today.
