In just over a year, Kinahan cartel associate Liam Byrne has gone from rubbing shoulders with Liverpool football legend Steven Gerrard to spending Christmas on remand in a prison cell.

The 43-year-old Dubliner appeared to be operating below the radar; his name was an obvious omission from the list of cartel hierarchy sanctioned by the US government last year.
