A bungling criminal was arrested covered in ink that exploded when he opened a cashbox after carrying out an armed robbery in Dublin city this morning.

The serial offender got away with over €20,000 in cash after using a hammer to target a cash-in-transit van in the south-inner city shortly after 6am.

However, after fleeing the scene, the robber opened the cash box, causing the ink cartridges contained inside as a security measure to explode and cover him in dye.

“This was a fairly amateur operation which is clear given that the suspect was detained near the scene completely covered in the ink from the cash box,” one source said.

The suspect, who is known to gardaí in Dublin as a serial burglar, was detained and is currently being detained at Kevin Street garda station for questioning.

The armed raid happened in the Cornmarket area of Dublin 8 at around 6.15am this morning.

Gardaí were alerted to the robbery of a cash-in-transit van, during which a man armed with a hammer threatened security workers.

The suspect demanded the contents of the cash box which were being transported before stealing the box and fleeing the scene.

Emergency services responded to the call out and subsequently located the man nearby.

A garda spokesperson said that all of the cash taken in the robbery has been recovered.

“The man (30s) is currently being detained at a garda station in Dublin under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

“No injuries were reported during the course of this incident.

“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on Cornmarket between 6am and 7am are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Kevin Street garda station on 01 666 9400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

“Investigations are ongoing,” the spokesperson added.
