Gardai launch probe after burglary gang break into family home in Santry

Gardaí in Dublin are investigating an aggravated burglary carried out by a gang on a home in Santry on New Year’s Eve.
The gang are believed to escaped with a sum of cash after breaking into the property while the family slept.
Images have gone viral on social media reportedly showing smashed glass strewn on the floor and damaged doors following the raid.
In a a statement, gardaí confirmed they are investigating the incident.
“Gardaí are investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred on the 31st December 2023 in the Santry area at approximately 7.30pm.
“A sum of cash was taken from the property.
“No arrests have been made and no injuries have been reported.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
More than 9,000 Irish homeowners experienced a burglary in their homes during 2023.
According to most recent CSO crime figures, the national burglary rate for the last 12 months has decreased by 8pc, but some counties have experienced significant increases in the number of reported break-ins.
Sligo and Leitrim had the highest increase in the period from July 2022 to June 2023, compared to the previous 12 months, with a 25pc increase (162 burglaries) in that region.
Mayo had the second highest rate of increase at 17pc (153 burglaries), followed by Louth with an 11pc increase (347 burglaries).
Donegal’s burglary rate also had a 9pc increase, with 146 burglaries.
