Man (40s) arrested after armed robbery of Dublin bookmakers due in court

A man in his 40s has been arrested after an armed robbery at a bookmakers in north Dublin yesterday morning.

The incident took place at a betting shop on North Street, Swords when a man wielding a knife entered the premises at around 10am.

The suspect threatened staff before leaving with stolen cash and mobile phones belonging to employees.

However, no one was injured during the robbery.

A man in his 40s was arrested by local Garda units and is currently being held for questioning at a Garda station in north Dublin under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardai at Swords were alerted shortly after 10am this morning, Saturday, January 6, 2024, after a lone male entered a bookmakers premises on North Street, Swords armed with a knife.

“He threatened staff before leaving the premises with a sum of cash and mobile phones belonging to staff members. There was no injuries reported.

“A man aged in his 40s was arrested by local Garda units responding to the incident. He is currently detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in north Dublin.”

In an update gardai added that the man appear before a sitting of Swords District Court on Monday, January 8.

“The charges include today’s incident and two other recent robberies from premises in the Swords area on December 15 and 17, 2023,” gardai added. “Investigations are ongoing.”
