Eight headstones have been damaged or destroyed after vandals went on the rampage at a Co Donegal graveyard.

The disgraceful act happened at the graveyard of St Eunan’s Cathedral in the village of Raphoe.

Some of the headstones were damaged while others were actually pulled out of the ground.

The damage at the Church of Ireland graveyard happened between Tuesday, December 19 and Wednesday, January 3.

Gardaí are appealing for any locals who may have witnessed the vandals coming or going to the graveyard to get in touch with them.

Local Garda Sergeant Eunan Walsh condemned the attack and appealed for information.

He said “We appeal to anybody who may have any relevant information in relation to the above incidents to make contact with gardaí in Letterkenny on 074-9167100,” Garda Sergeant Walsh said.

“We appreciate that the timeframe is quite long for the first number of incidents, but we are hopeful that someone may recall seeing activity around the graveyard on January 3rd between 12.10pm and 2pm.

“If anybody travelled in the area on that date between those times with a dash cam we ask them to make the footage available to us please.”
