Gardai hunting man after large cash sum stolen from Cork credit union after staff threatening with knife

The shock incident happened at the Clonakilty & Dunmanway Credit Union at around 12:35pm

GARDAi are hunting a man who stole a sum of cash from a credit union in cork after threatening staff with a knife.

The shock incident happened at around 12:35pm at Kent Street in Clonakilty, Co Cork.

The man entered the Clonakilty & Dunmanway Credit Union and demanded cash.

The thug produced a knife and threatened a member of staff in the course of the robbery.

The man then fled the scene with a large sum of cash.

It’s believed that that cash in the region of €2,000 was stolen from the business.

A technical examination of the scene has been conducted and an incident room has been set up at Clonakilty Garda station.

No injuries were reported.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing to the public for information to assist an ongoing investigation into a robbery that occurred in County Cork earlier today, Friday 12th January 2024.

At approximately 12:35pm, one male entered a business premises at Kent Street in Clonakilty, threatened a member of staff and demanded cash. A knife was produced during the course of the robbery.

“This male left the scene shortly after with a sum of cash. No injuries were reported.

“A technical examination of the scene was conducted and an incident room has been set up at Clonakilty Garda station.

“Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this robbery to come forward.

“Any person who was travelling through Kent Street car park between 12:20pm and 12:50pm and observed any activity which drew their attention are asked to come forward.

“Any road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling through Kent Street car park and/or nearby areas between 12:20pm and 12:50pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information that can assist Gardaí with this investigation are asked to contact Clonakilty Garda station on 023 882 1570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
