One motorist had a “lucky escape” over the weekend after crashing their car into a pole in Co Monaghan.

Gardaí were alerted to the dangerous hit-and-run incident on Saturday night after a passerby came across the crashed vehicle, which had “taken out” an electricity pole.

No injuries were reported but the driver and passengers had fled the scene which alarmed gardaí, who noted that there were empty and half-consumed bottles of alcohol in the front and back seats of the car.

Taking to social media on Tuesday evening, gardaí reminded road users that irresponsible driving causes “dangerous collisions”.

The post read: “For those in any doubt that driving behaviour causes dangerous collisions – Gardaí in Monaghan were alerted to this crashed car by a passerby on Saturday night.

“It had taken out an electricity pole but no driver was to be found nearby, much to our alarm.

“The driver and passengers had immediately fled – a lucky escape it seems given that the front and back seats were filled with empty and half drank bottles of alcohol.

“Luckier again that no other road users were killed or injured as a consequence. #SaferRoads”.
