A FIEND who was caged after he tried to abduct an 11-year-old girl has been released from prison, the Irish Sun can reveal.

Michael Martin, 44, is now back living in Co Waterford after his release from Arbour Hill prison in Dublin two weeks ago.

Since his release, he has been keeping a low profile and has been engaging with Gardai.

As part of his release conditions the force will continue to monitor his behaviour and movements. If he moves from his current location, he has to inform them.

One local told us: “People are aware that he’s out and they are staying away from him. It’s reassuring to know that the Gardai are keeping tabs on him.

“He was convicted of a very serious crime and hopefully prison has helped him change. He still has a few friends and people who will look out for him.”

Martin initially received a 14-year sentence in 2015 over his failed kidnapping bid but this was later cut to eleven after an appeal.

Martin received his conviction after his attempt to abduct a child.

He had targeted the girl as she played with her brothers in the rural area of Cullohill in March 2015.

After initially speaking to her, he grabbed the girl and tried to force her into his car.

The girl struggled and her ten-year-old brother ran to her aid and attacked the pervert.

Martin, who the court heard had suffered from PTSD, was forced away from the scene as the brave boy rescued his sister.

The career criminal, who has 97 previous convictions, was released due to time served and because of good behaviour.

During his time behind bars, Martin took part in courses to help deal with his propensity for violence.

Previous convictions

His previous convictions include sexual assault, threats to kill, burglary and theft.

At Martin’s trial, Judge Keenan Johnson said he had a “high risk of reoffending”.

The senior judge said: “The accused’s background was both chaotic and unhappy.

“He suffered a number of significant bereavements throughout his life including the death of his first girlfriend by suicide, while she was pregnant with their child.

“What he did was a terrible thing. However I am not sure that he fully appreciates that.

“If I had the option, I would impose a life sentence, not so much to punish the accused, but rather to protect society.”
