Criminal probe launched after €100k of drugs goes missing from garda barracks

Gardaí have launched a criminal investigation after around €100,000 worth of drugs went missing from a garda station.

The drug seizure, understood to be made up of cannabis, was recovered in a recent operation and was being stored at a garda barracks in the Eastern Division.

In recent days it emerged that the significant quantity of drugs went missing and could not be located.

As a result, garda management ordered a criminal investigation into the matter and how the drugs were removed from where they were being stored.

One source told the Irish Independent: “It’s around €100,000 worth of cannabis and is a significant quantity of drugs to go missing, this is being taken extremely seriously and efforts are ongoing to determine what happened here.”

Sources said that searches have been carried out including of inside the garda station but that the missing drugs have not yet been located.

This includes offices, garages, outhouses and bins which have been examined.

In a statement a garda spokesperson said: “A criminal investigation is currently underway following reports that a significant amount of seized drugs were removed from a Garda Station in the East of the country.

“Enquires are ongoing. No additional information is available at this time.”
