OAP rushed to hospital after assault during overnight Westmeath burglary

A man in his 80s was rushed to hospital after a thief broke into his Co Westmeath home in the middle of the night and assaulted him.

Gardaí are investigating the aggravated burglary, which took place on Main Street, Kilbeggan, shortly after 1am on Tuesday morning.

A sum of cash was taken from the property and a man in his 80s was injured during the incident.

He received medical treatment at Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore and has since been discharged.

Gardaí conducted a technical examination of the scene and launched an investigation into the aggravated burglary.

They are appealing for anyone with any information regarding this incident to come forward.

In particular, gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Main Street area of Kilbeggan between midnight and 3am on Tuesday and saw anything which may have drawn their attention.

“Any road users who have video camera footage (including dash-cam) from that area at that time is asked to make it available to gardaí,” a spokesperson said.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.”
