Sligo man (37) pleads guilty to possession of 13,000 child sexual abuse images

A 37 year old man has been remanded for sentencing after pleading guilty to possessing over 13,000 child sexual abuse images and over 1,200 videos.

Gavin Flynn of Ballyscanlon, Grange admitted two charges of possession of child pornography at Sligo Garda Station on July 2nd 2019.

No plea was entered with regard to a third charge but Prosecuting Barrister Mr Leo Mulrooney (instructed by Ms Elisa McHugh State Solicitor) said the two guilty pleas were entered on a full facts basis to be outlined at the sentencing hearing.

Flynn pleaded guilty on Tuesday before Judge to possessing 13,078 images and 1,204 videos at Sligo Garda Station on his Samsung Notebook.

He further pleaded guilty to possessing 285 images and 58 videos on a HP laptop.

The defendant had also been facing a third count – possessing 2,248 images and 124 videos on a USB drive but no plea was entered to this charge.

Ms Eileen O’Leary SC with Mr Eugene Deering BL, instructed by Mr Mark Mullaney, Solicitor (defending)), sought the preparation of a probation report in advance of the sentencing hearing and she was hopeful the defendant could be placed on a Safer Lives Programme in the interim.

Judge Sinead Ní Chulachain ordered a probation report and adjourned sentencing to July 23rd.
