Gardai have launched an investigation after one of the force’s stations had to be evacuated during a security alert.

Ronanstown Garda Station in west Dublin was cleared after a man was seen placing a suspect device at the entrance yesterday morning.

Gardaí sealed off a wide area around the station and called in members of the Defence Forces’ EOD team, or bomb squad to examine the device.

Gardaí later said the device was declared a hoax. An investigation is now under way. A Garda spokesman said yesterday “Gardaí responded to a security alert earlier this morning at Ronanstown Garda Station, Dublin 22.

“A cordon was put in place and the services of the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was requested. The device was subsequently deemed safe.

“This incident has now been resolved. It is understood to have been a hoax. Enquiries are ongoing.” Officers are now trying to establish a motive for the incident.
