A Dublin man has admitted punching a prison officer and a garda sergeant in the face in separate attacks.

Jonathan Parrot (37) hit and injured the prison guard while he was an inmate at Mountjoy, while the attack on the garda happened on a Dublin street a year later.

The case against him was adjourned at Dublin District Court for victim impact evidence.

Parrot, with an address at Portland Row in the north inner city, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to both men in incidents a decade ago.

Garda Sergeant Tony Flanagan told Judge Anthony Halpin the DPP consented to the cases being dealt with in the district court on pleas of guilty only.

The judge asked to hear an outline of the evidence so he could consider the issue of jurisdiction.

Sgt Flanagan said Parrot was a prisoner in Mountjoy on December 19, 2013 when he struck an officer, causing soft tissue injury to his jaw.

The victim had soreness to his mouth and lost a day of work afterwards, but there were no long-term injuries and he made a full recovery.

In the second unconnected incident, a garda sergeant had “an interaction” with Parrot on King’s Inn Street on July 3, 2014.

The accused struck him on the mouth and twice on the left temple with his fist.

This victim attended a doctor to be treated for a slight cut to his upper lip, abrasions to his chin and bruising to his temple, but made a full recovery and remained on duty, Sgt Flanagan said.

Judge Halpin accepted jurisdiction, allowing the case to remain in the district court instead of sending it forward to the circuit court, which has tougher potential sentencing powers on conviction.

The court heard victim impact statements may be required. The judge remanded Parrot on continuing bail to a date later this month for this, as well as full facts and mitigation to be heard before sentencing.
