Major investigation after 1,100 prescription pills allegedly found at prison officer’s home in garda raid as arrest made

A MAJOR probe is under way after 1,100 prescription pills were allegedly recovered from a prison officer’s home last night.

The Irish Sun can reveal the pills were discovered after a Garda raid and that a man in his 30s has been arrested.

A quantity of cash was also seized during the search.

The officer – based at a Dublin prison – is currently being questioned by Gardai

The raid was undertaken by Gardai after they received information a prison officer was storing the drugs.

One theory is that he was holding the drugs for a north Dublin crime gang.

One senior source said: “This incident has been the talk of the prison because these prescription pills are in big demand in the prison system.”

The Irish Prison Service said: “It would not be appropriate for the Irish Prison Service to comment on matters relating to any individual staff member.

“The Irish Prison Service sets high standards in respect of its staff and requires that all staff carry out their duties with integrity, commitment and professionalism. 

“The vast majority of staff adhere to these standards at all times.

“In circumstances where the conduct of a staff member does fall below the high standards expected, this is treated with the utmost seriousness in accordance with the Civil Service Code of Discipline.”

Gardai confirmed that an arrest has been made in connection with the raid.

In a statement a spokesperson said:” The Dublin Crime Response Team conducted a search under warrant at a residence in Dublin on the evening of Thursday February 8.

“In excess of €2,000 euros of controlled drugs in tablet form were seized and €1,200 in cash.

“A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with this seizure and he is currently being detained at under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Act at a Dublin City Garda Station.

“All of the drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.”
