Ring of steel plan to stop far-right thugs hijacking protest over Drogheda hotel housing refugees after ‘fire’ threats

GARDA reinforcements will be drafted into Drogheda tomorrow to stop the far-right hijacking a protest in the town over a hotel being used to house refugees.
The 113-bedroom D Hotel is due to put up 500 people seeking international protection, it was confirmed this week.
There is outrage in the Louth town at the move and a protest march is due to take place at 2pm tomorrow.
Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman has assured local TDs that only families will be housed in the hotel — the last remaining one in Drogheda where tourists could stay.
He said they will not be placing single refugees in the building, which is right next door to Drogheda’s biggest shopping centre, Scotch Hall.
Supt Andrew Watters confirmed an intensive security operation is being put in place to make sure the protest is peaceful after the Dublin riots in November.
He added: “After what happened in Dublin we will be bringing in reinforcements to police this march and to ensure there is no trouble.
“We have a plan in place and are confident we will keep the peace.”
Officers are expecting a couple of hundred “outside” protesters to try and hijack the rally.
There has been a large amount of threats issued on social media, with talk of “fire” and “bullets” to be used.
