A dealer caught with cocaine, cannabis and drug paraphernalia had struggled since the tragic death of his brother two years ago, a court has heard.

Patrick Casey (24) was described by a judge as “a dealer at the lower end”.

Judge David McHugh sentenced Casey to six months in prison, which he suspended for two years.

The defendant, with an address at Berryfield Road in Finglas, admitted drug possession and supply charges.

Blanchardstown District Court heard gardaí obtained a warrant and searched his home on May 11, 2021, and found cannabis worth €26, as well as cocaine with a street value of €184.

Casey was also stopped and searched by gardaí on November 26, 2021, and they found cannabis worth €40, cocaine worth €175 and €179 in cash, the court was told.

Weighing scales and a mobile phone with evidence of drug activity were also found, Garda Hayley Robinson said.

Defence lawyer Ciaran MacLoughlin said the defendant had been doing well until two years ago, when his brother was tragically found dead in a local park.

Casey was living at home and caring for his mother, and was doing well again, Mr MacLoughlin said.

He said he was hopeful that the court would not see his client again.
